I Confess.....

I hate to admit it but I honestly don't think all babies are cute.

I really don't.

I especially do not think that most newborn babies are cute.

Either I don't see what other people are seeing when they look upon an infant or else other people are simply telling lies.

I actually think that lots of babies make ET look actually rather cute.

I have said to people 'oh what a cute baby' and really meant 'Heck, your gene pool just played a terribly cruel trick on you, that is an incredibly ugly baby'

I am not proud of myself. (Honestly!)

I've heard people say every mother thinks her own babies are beautiful.

Not me.

When I first saw Thomas I desperately wanted him to be cute.

My first thoughts?
'OH NO his eyebrows and hairline merge'

Should I have been allowed to bring him home from the hospital or reproduce further?

Probably not!

But I was and I have. The latter being just as hairy as the former.

I agree, but I still think that's one cute baby. My son was adorable for a week, a weird awkward teenager baby for several months, and then gorgeous... currently, he's still gorgeous - at least in my severely biased opinion. :)

I tend to agree with you - most newborns aren't the most pleasant to look at. But that picture proves there are exceptions to the rule. He IS cute. And I didn't even have to lie. That is an adorable newborn.

lol.... that is so true. So many babies are born butt ugly but it's not really something we can say. I applaud you for your honesty. :)

True, some babies aren't cute as newborns, but I know that mine were. I had so many people telling me, "I don't think newborns are very cute, but your baby is just gorgeous."

Your babies were cute though! But, I guess we're all entitled to our opinion. At least they're very handsome now and you can't argue that! ;)

I agree with you...I just hope this post wasn't inspired by the photos of my new niece. ;)

I agree with you! Most babies are really ugly! But seriously, even though his eyebrows and hairline do almost meet, he is/was beautiful!

Come on now! he's cute!
I agree on teh homely baby boom.
HAHA my aunt said her whole pregnancy she wished for a beautiful baby. When she finally had my cousin (she is 9 now) my aunt was horrified. She said my cousin looked like a very ugly man of mexican decent... (my aunt and her ex husband are both blonds with light complexion... my cousin was born with black hair and eyebrows and a darker complexion.) she is pale and blond now LOL. Its a deep dark family joke...

Lol I agree a lot of newborns aren't cute! It takes some babies a litlle longer to be cute. However that baby is super cute!

Are you kidding? He is so cute in that picture. And, yes, I do agree that most newborns are terribly unattractive, including my own. Their faces are always swollen for a couple days from the delivery and just generally not what they will ultimately look like. Austin had a crooked nose for about a week. I tried not to cry about that and tell myself it would straighten out.
Some kind of service came in to my hospital room after both deliveries and offered to take a free picture that I could order more of. I laughed at the woman and asked her if she was serious!!!

Awww...they ALL have their moments.

You know my FIRST moment seeing Cole (after saying how much he looked just like his siblings)? I noticed the dimple in his chin. AKA: the butt chin. But after a few talks with some girlfriends I was assured this is a very nice trait in men and he was going to be cute no matter what. LOL Of course he is and of course chin dimples aren't ugly, but that was my first ever thought on my sweet innocent baby.

There is nothing wrong with you! lol

I think your little man is just beautiful in this picture :)

I agree.

One of my students came to see Frack in the hospital when he was born. Her comment was, "He's so hairy! Let's call him Hairy Gary!" (that's not his name, BTW) :) I just thought it was funny that my child had hair coming out from every possible location! I was kinda sad when it fell out. Alright. Not really.

Most newborns do look pretty funny...especially right after they are born.

Yours, however looks like a cutie to me! There are exceptions to the rule. And, then, there are kids that still aren't cute at 5!!!

Yes, that IS most certainly an incredibly cute baby. I will agree some are not, and well, some are downright hideous. But they usually clean up nice and look better later in life :-)

I'm sighing with relief! I now just tell my pregnant friends that I'm not a baby person. Give em to me when they are 8 month old...before then, not so much. Telling them this ahead of time gives them the forewarning that I won't be ooohing and aaahing over how cute they are.
I've never seen a cute newborn, well except for mine of course! ;)

You are so not alone. My son had the hairline thing going on too. He actually looked like he had a hairy forehead. He did have a hairy back! What baby has a hairy back?? I was dying! I had never seen anything like it before. He grew into all his hair and looks like a normal kid. And he did turn into a really cute baby eventually. I'd say around the 3-5month mark.

This post also reminded me of that Seinfeld episode with the ugly baby. Too funny!

awwww....he's gorgeous. My babies looked just like this- and they get cuter and cuter as they age;-)

We immediately started calling my daughter "Monkey Doo"due to the copious amounts of hair she had. The name still sticks but she is a bit less hairy!

i have to agree with you that some babies just aren't cute. i visited my girlfriend witha 4 week old. he had all of the baby acne and was really fussy (i almost think this made hime less cute than the baby acne). luckily they go through so many stages and change so much that they become cute quickly!

i do think thomas looks really cute in this photo!!!

I couldn't agree more. Chase had hair just like that and his back was hairy too. That all went away after a couple of weeks but my husband was concerned about our hairy baby.

Though I do have to say....your newborn was gorgeous!

When I look at my newborns (with their perfectly shaped heads due to 3 c-sections) I try to convince myself that they are cute. I know withing 48 hours they won't be so cute because they will be screaming for the next 3 months. Now that's not cute.

That is true. newborns generally favor aliens. I love the hairline and brow merge...

Your eyes are in backwards. He is adorable!

I am so glad to hear someone admit this out loud. I don't particularily find newborn babes all that attractive. I think it takes them a few weeks, daresay even a few months to grow into their faces. Granted, I have seen many beautiful newborns, but for the most part, mine especially (except for the Little Imp, who in my humble opinion was gorgeous!) weren't too cute.

I think your little guy is very cute. Now there are ugly babies--it's hard to say something when you see one 'ummm, cute hat' ;)

Blessings From Above said...

I totally think the same thing about some babies, but you always feel obligated to gush all over them.

BTW, your little guy IS adorable...and I'm not just saying that!

TOTALLY agree with you!

I remember when they held Anya above the curtain, I thougt, "THAT'S what she looks like?"

Thanks for putting it out there! :)

See, I thought I totally had a cute newborn with my first born until I had a baby for someone else - then I was like 'oh, that's what a cute baby looks like'.

Don't you feel better getting that off your chest :)

Wendi said...

I agree.
I never lie though.
I just say ..."Awww. He is soooo tiny."
"What a sweet baby."
"She looks just like you."
All true...but I never say cute or gorgeous.
Your newborn however is cute.
Sooo tiny, but really handsome.

So true, so true! Babies get better looking after they pass the larval stage :)

Oh you know what drives me nuts, is when people say they see the resemblance! LIke I want to look like this crinkly bit.

Question- Do you remember the baby on Knocked Up? The one in the waiting room- It's so ugly my husband and I argue if it's real or just some Hollywood wizardry.

Okay, it is sooo good to know that I'm not the only one out there! I feel the say way. For the longest time I thought I was a "bad mother" because I didn't think my son was the cutest newborn I had ever seen. Don't get me wrong, he was cute but just not what I expected.

Having worked in newborn intensive care for over 13 years I can testify that there are loads of plain ugly babies. As nurses we learned to say how tiny they were and that yes their heads would most likely stop being flat, pointed or other shapes due to delivery or prematurity. So to some extent it is the type of delivery that takes place that makes the head shape and the size of mom's pelvis that causes "cone heads" not a visit from aliens. Those moms with "big" pelvis's seem to have little round headed babies. So there is something to be said to having "big hips".
All that being said, There really are some really cute babies, and a whole bunch that only a mother can love. Course with Marty being 6'2" we had great looking babies. (totally unprejudiced response of course)... well maybe Alisha was a bit long faced :~)wink, wink.
