The Great Krispy Kreme Controversy

During my visit to London on Saturday I had a little spare time for shopping. Obviously this involved buying absolutely nothing for myself but something for the kids.

I also found out that you can take the mummy away from the kids but you just can't take the kids away from the mummy. With every cry or call for a Mummy I heard I couldn't help but instinctively turn around expecting it to be one of my boys. I guess there just isn't a parenting switch we can turn off for such occasions.

But I did come to the happy realisation that there is a Selfridges in London and Selfridges just so happen to have Krispy Kreme outlets.
I love krispy Kremes. Who doesn't?

What is not to like?

100% Sugary deliciousness in every bite.

I remember fondly my first encounter with a KK. The store by Arizona Mills Mall Summer of '99. (Next year is our 10 year anniversary no less.) I almost kissed the kind employee who explained to me that every customer gets a free doughnut. I inhaled my glazed ring doughnut in oh, about 2 seconds, and was instantly hooked. No doubt I went on to eat 4 others.

Fortunately for both my ever slowing metabolism and I Krispy Kremes are far from mainstream in the UK. I sadly don't happen to live close enough to any of the locations to justify frequent doughnut purchasing trips. If I did I assure you I would, most likely daily.

So you can imagine my elation as I suddenly remembered I was in KK territory. I practically floated to the store and there before me was the most beautiful display of doughnuts ever known to man. (At this point I have been KK free for seven long, loooong years). I stood and tried to figure out in my mind how many doughnuts I could actually eat before I'd be violently ill. I decided on two but knew perfectly well I could devour ten, easily.

I took my precious purchases and sat and thoroughly enjoy every single mouthful.

Bliss!

Worth every single penny.

As I came down from the heady heights of my extreme sugar high I realised in the cold light of day that I just spent £1.35 per doughnut. That is almost $3 a pop.

I essentially just spent $6 on two doughnuts and knew my money would have gone so much further in the US. Plus to add insult to injury here in the UK there are no freebies for customers whatsoever.

So next time you're at Krispy Kremes enjoying your freebie please think of me because no doubt I subsidised it by paying an extortionate £1.35 per doughnut.

And you are welcome!
(Krispy Kremes opens in Leeds Feb '09, I envision far more frequent trips occurring!)

I get a freebie, my kids get a freebie, they get to watch how they're made... is it any wonder why I've never taken them to a museum?

That exact Krispy Kreme was where i had my first too! (we call it "the circle mall") I had two little kids at that point and I ordered them each a donut when we walked in the door. While we were waiting they each got their free donut, which I had no idea about. So they ended up with two donuts each. Not a great idea for a 2 and 3 year old. Can you say "sugar-high"?

Krispy's are ok. They're so super sugary that I can only eat about 1, and I am a sugar/candy/chocolate freak! If you were in the US you'd have to try a Lamar's. They're the best! Just the right amount of sweetness!

I just mentioned KK in my post yesterday. They are good, but I love the cake donuts from Dunkin' Donuts. My husband agrees with you. :)

But it was no doubt well worth every cent!

I share your pain.....I have to shut my eyes everytime we come out of Asda by the Trafford Centre as we have a Krispy Kreme there..... it's way too tempting (especially because it's a drive-through and we don't even have to get out of the car!!!!) It may be expensive for doughnuts but sooooo worth it. Yum!! :)

Oh..so...yummy! I love KK! You are so right, they can easily be inhaled in one bite. I to have not had one in a while but next time I do, I will dedicate it to you!

Yummy! It was worth it...very much so! I live in Atlanta where the company was started, and they are everywhere! It is amazing I haven't gained 100 lbs!

Yeah I'm the same way in regards to the Mommy Switch - just isn't there. I haven't gone as far away from my son as you are right now, but even just on date nights with the hubs, I hear a kid cry or anything and I always instinctively turn. DH thinks it's funny. :/

Congrats on the KK find even if it is a bit more expensive! :)

We have a KK about 2 miles from the house, I drool when I drive by and the "Hot Now" sign is lit up - there is nothing better than when those glazed sugary babies have come right out of the oven. I'll toast to you the nest time we indulge!

What, I had no idea that you could get a free Krispie Kreme for just say 'hey, I want one'.

I'm really thinking you are getting special treatment for being that *125 lbs*. They are thinking 'give that girl a donut, she needs it...' :)

Awesome with the cross trainer love though~

Do you realize what you've done to me? I'm sitting at my computer at work drooling. I don't even think I'm going to be able to make it to my lunch break before I head out in search of a Krispy Kream. And all I'm gonna say is I'm not limiting myself to just two...

I'll be sure to eat my next freebie for ya :)
We have not been to KK for a while--now you are making crave a hot glazed :)

Ok small world. We too used to visit the Krisy Kremes by Arizona Mills mall, home to my favorite Gap outlet!

But alas that $6 was probably the best $6. And to be able to eat them slowly and in peace? Probably worth more than $6! :)

mmmm... doughnuts... they are seriously a weakness of mine. It's one of the few reasons why it's ok that I'm always running late for work. If I'm not, somehow my car ends up going to the doughnut shop...

Don't hate me but I live 5 minutes from the town where Krispy Kreme is headquartered and oddly enough there is only ONE KK here!

WOW! I'm the 19th Comment! You sure are popular! I've actually been CRAVING KK for months now, but some how have managed to resist the temptation - more for lack of leaving the house than anything else! But OH do i love those!
I LOVE the look of your blog! I guess I haven't seen it in a while, since i always read your stuff in Google Reader!
Oh and as far as a betrothal, I'm All FOR IT! (as long as her current boyfriend doesn't grab her first ;) The only stipulation is that they live here in the US - I'm sorry but I'm not flying to the UK every time I want to see my grandkids!! :D Love ya!

My mouth is watering! They are SO good.
I know you don't want to hear this, but watch out for those Krispy Kremes, they aren't good for those in search of their abs.

Ok, I'm not that much of a doughnut fan, but those are GOOD! I have never been to that KK, and now I'm wondering if it's still there. I'm curious.

You. Are. Evil.

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait... so what you're saying is, in the US (I didn't know they had expanded all the way across the ocean) Krispy Kreme gives everyone a free donut with whatever else they buy??? You're not talking about a temporary promotion or something?

There's a reason I avoid going into donut stores much, especially Krispy Kreme (I've only had them outside their stores), but the Cheap Bastard in me may team up with the Glutton to commandeer my motor control center so they can steer me to a Krispy Kreme very soon.

I eagerly await your response.

You know-I happen to have a killer recipe for homemade donuts that blow KK out of the water! After eating those, I'm not even tempted by that disgusting chain anymore. Let me know if you want the recipe:)

Do they really have Krispy Kreme over there now? Oh my! And, you could probably get a whole dozen for that price here in the USA couldn't you?

i love it!!! Your secret love affair w/ KK!!! I can just picture you sitting on a bench, eating your donuts, licking evey bit of glaze off your fingers!!! hahaha!

so, just to rub it in a little more...there is a Krispy Kreme "factory" about 12 miles from my house. The kids LOVE to go and watch the donuts made thru the glass window...and if you go while they are making the glazed ones...yes - you get a FREE SAMPLE!!!

$6 on 2??? wow...you poor thing, you!

Well, you must move back then!

I've never received a free donut from KK....I must be missing out. And, holy cow, $6...I'm sure it was worth it.

I hope you didn't feel guilty when you got home to your cross-trainer!

Now I KNOW there are drugs involved!
No one in their right mind does a post on being in love with their cross trainer and follows that with a post about Krispy Kreme?
No. one.

You had me at Krispy Kreme.
I skipped right to the comment section.
I was afraid there may be a photo of one of those circles of deliciousness and I will gain 5 pounds just looking at it.
Don't. tempt. me.
Could you write your next post on the benefits of steamed veggies?
LOL

Ahhh, Krispy Kreme!
We got one a couple of years ago.
I got addicted.
They are so light and fluffy it is no problem whatsoever to inhale, say 50 at once.
Alas, they didn't do so well in RI and recently closed.
Guess I'll have to stick to donut cakes!

I am convinced that the closest thing to heaven is that first bite of a FRESH HOT Krispy Kreme!!! Oh Mama Mia!
I am thankful that I have KK here in town but I am also just as thankful that is not on my side of town. My hips thank me often for that fact but for you, I will make that sacrifice to KK this week!

Oh, I miss those! We have them in our town but their shipped in. In Chicago I used to do a teenage car- pickup right by one. If the special light was on, then I would stop and have one hot. Oh, they melt in your mouth! Gosh I'm hungry!

OMG that's almost $3 per donut.

I didn't even know they had KK's over in the UK! As for me, whilst I don't particularily care for donuts, give me a Tesco's or better yet, one of Waitrose's cream filled round little donuts!!!!

Makes me wanna see how much a quickie round trip over the pond on BA is! *lol*
